Long Distance Moving

Long Distance Moving
(Part 1)

Long distance moving is a daunting task that requires a lot of work and a
great deal of planning. There are different types of moving miseries that we
all can run into. Some people are still knee deep in boxes months after the
move is "Done"

Long distance moving should not be thought of as 1 major task but as many
small tasks that need to be accomplished. Break the move down into more manageable
tasks. This should help break up the project over time and not be superbly
overwhelming.

Tell your Family

  • Tell your children about the move early so that they can adjust to the
thought of it. Preferably as soon as you know
  • If children don’t understand why you are moving explain the reason (Daddy’s
new job is in this town, we are moving closer to grandma etc.)
  • Find a place that you know your children will love such as a playground,
theme park etc. and explain how much they will enjoy the move

Selecting a Long Distance Mover

Find referrals about long distance movers in advance. Check the local yellow
pages or even online under long distance moving companies. Have 2 or 3 long
distance moving companies come out to your house to give you an estimate. When
the long distance movers come out you will want to have a general idea of what
stays and what goes.

You will want to find out:

  • Estimated Moving costs
  • How movers will pack fragile items
  • Provisions of the contract
  • Insurance Coverage (You may need to supplement this)
  • Who will handle the move on the other end (Assuming the company does not
have offices in the city you are moving to
  • Check the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints
    about the company

Ask:

  • If the movers will help you disconnect washers, dryers, stoves, tv’s and
air conditioners. You will want to know if you need to make other arrangements
  • About the bill of lading (Contract that outlines your move) Read it thoroughly.
If you are not very good about contracts have a friend look it over or someone
who might have already made a long distance move
