How to clean your Refrigerator
If you have any of these items in your refrigerator it is time to clean your
refrigerator:
- Moldy Cheese
- Mystery Meat
- Rotting Fruits or Vegetables
- Leftover Candy from the Holidays
- Frozen Breads and meats from an unknown time
How to Start
You should clean out your refrigerator regularly. The best time to clean out
your refrigerator is when you are low on food. This prevents you from having
to deal with moving everything around
- Empty the refrigerator one shelf at a time.Wipe down each shelf as you
go - Throw out all items that you cannot tell the date on. Old cheese, half
used cans of tomato sauce. old jam etc. - Take out the items on the door and evaluate if they should really be there
or not. - Thoroughly clean out those shelves
- Throw out all items that you are unsure of. It is not worth a trip to the
dr for food poisoning - Empty the meat bin and crisper. Cleaning it out thoroughly
- Sort through freezer items. The Freezer just slows down spoilage it does
not prevent it - Remove all shelves and other removable pieces that can be easily washed
in your sink - Once your refrigerator is empty you can use a mixture of bleach and water
to wipe down the entire refrigerator. You can also use another liquid cleaner
as well - After you have wiped it down completely go over it again one more time
with just a water solution removing all of the bleach from within
Storage Tips
- Select a purpose for each of your shelves (Beverages, bread, cheese and
meats etc.) This will make it easier to store and find in the future - Always group similar items together
- Items that you will use consistantly should be found at the front of your
refrigerator where items that you are less likely to use should be stored
towards the rear - When storing leftovers or home wrapped items place the date on the item.
You really won’t remember! - If you store lots of soda cans you should purchase a can dispensar that
could help organize it - A 2 Tier Lazy Susan could help make the back of the refrigerator more accessible
- Keep eggs in their original carton. They stay fresher this way
- Store meats on the coldest shelf or in the meat bin
- Cut up celery sticks and carrots as soon as possible and place them in
a container with water to preserve their freshness - Leftovers should be stacked in see through containers with a date on top
so you can easily see what it is and when it was stored
